The Wii Dance

Do you still play the Nintendo Wii with friends? Do you have any friends who have not yet come up with a Mii and insist on taking five hours to create one before they’ll play anything with you? Well thanks to Mike Song, you’re no longer forced to sit on the couch gritting your teeth and thinking “COME ON!!!! THAT DOESN’T EVEN FUCKING LOOK LIKE YOU!!!”

Mike invented the Wii Mii song dance as part of the class he taught for Boogiezone’s “Boogiezone University” event. Now you can watch and learn. And the next time your friends take too long to create their Mii, you can bust out your new moves.

First, I would like to say thank you to Mike Song for his invention. Secondly, I would like to say that getting to tell people you work at a place called “Boogiezone University” is pretty awesome.

P.S. I would like to state for the record that the original title of this article was “Dance with Mii.” I then changed it thinking “Come on, Kate. The Wii puns are so fucking old and done with. Come up with something better.” But I couldn’t. So it became “The Wii Dance.” And then I was sad that no one would see my Dance with Mii joke. So I started this P.S. I’m not sure which part of that story is the most pathetic.

Dr Pepper Helps Gamers with College Tuition

If you’re freaking out over the realization that you just blew all of next semester’s tuition on video games, Dr Pepper may be able to help you out. This week Major League Gaming announced the details of the Dr Pepper Collegiate Challenge, a program launched in conjunction with Dr Pepper to give $10,000 for tuition to the nation’s top collegiate video gamer.

Participation in the Collegiate Challenge is easy. Just go to MLGpro.com/tuition and identify the college or university you attend. You can then immediately begin to compete in MLG ladders. The Dr Pepper Collegiate Challenge winner will be announced in January 2009.

I Love the Smell of Dry Erase in the Morning…

Check out this interactive experience from ENESS. What you’re seeing in the clip above is a real live demonstration of their physics-based engine responding to its real life surroundings. The computer sees and recognizes the black shapes on the whiteboard and the virtual ball behaves accordingly. And considering how much fresh dry erase marker juice you’ll need to use to play, you should get a nice little buzz after a few rounds.

Gamer Proposes through Hacked Chrono Trigger

[youtube 7_HMLvLB7b0]

We may be nerds, but we come up with some of the most romantic proposals EVAR.

Here’s the back story:

On October 17th, 2008, I proposed to my (now) Fiance. Originally I wanted to retun to the site of our first date, Mount Baker, near Bellingham Washington. Sadly, there was no discrete way to get her out there. So I turned to the next best thing, digitally recreating the mountain!

But why stop there? I figured I’d try and recreate many of our other favorite memories — stargazing, dancing, even her favorite song lyrics (from the Princess Bride). I’m a college student who is studying Computer Science, and I wanted to do something unique that used my talents, so I did some research on Rom hacking, as she was playing through Chrono Trigger….

When her name appeared on screen (blurred in this video), she glanced over to me (on one knee, with the ring out), wondering, “How did they get my name in this game?” When she saw the ring, she reread the proposal, nodded yes, and said, “You are such a huge nerd! I love this!”

Obama Advertises in Video Games

If you live in one of the 10 battleground states and play Burnout Paradise, Madden 09, Nascar 09, NBA Live 08, Need for Speed Carbon, Need for Speed Pro Street, NFL on Tour, NHL 09, or Skate on the 360, you may catch a glimpse of an in-game ad from Senator Obama. Even though billboard ads in racing games like the one pictured above aren’t the best places to put an ad, the move is still a smart one and shows that Obama understands that reaching the gaming audience isn’t going to happen in TV commercials. According to The Seattle Times, Massive approached both the Obama and McCain campaigns but McCain’s declined. The ads will run through November 3 and make history as the first presidential dynamic in-game ads.

Wario Land Shakes Up YouTube

warioland.jpg

It’s tough for agencies to come up with clever banner ads that won’t get ignored, but when they do… BAM! Check out the new campaign for Wario Land Shake It for the Wii. They’ve taken over a YouTube page and at first, it just looks like a nice experience video. But wait until the end to see what happens. Once it’s done playing, all of the page links still work and you can even throw the elements around the screen. Well done, Nintendo. That’s good stuff.

Register to Vote on your Xbox 360 Today

Don’t want to leave your 72 hour Rainbow 6 marathon to go register to vote? This year, you won’t have to. Microsoft Corporation and Rock the Vote just announced a partnership that will allow 360 owners to register to vote, participate in presidential polls and voice their opinions to the presidential candidates starting on Monday, August 25th – the first day of the Democratic National Convention. Just how many people do they think can be reached through Xbox LIVE? Look at it this way: if Xbox LIVE were a state, it would rank as the country’s seventh largest, giving it approximately 20 electoral votes. We should probably prepare ourselves to see Master Chief as the most popular write in candidate this election.
