The casual/hardcore argument is garbage. It's the modern-day equivalent of the old Sega/Nintendo loyalty, which did everybody who maintained that stance a disservice. I love challenging games, but it comes down to two things in design: Is it simple enough to pick up and play? Is it fun? This looks to be a qualifier for both criteria.
