Praise Jeebus With Your Geetar

So I haven’t posted jack this week because I took a little vacation time. Where did I go? My couch mostly. Sometimes to pee. Couple times on Heiniken runs. A friend at work referred to this as a “staycation.” I’ve also heard it referred to as “unemployment” but I guess that really only works when you don’t have a cubicle waiting patiently for your return.

After my brief but beautiful hiatus, I started catching up on headlines. First one that caught my eye was from Gizmodo: Guitar Praise: Guitar Hero Minus the Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n Roll. For real?!

For

REAL.

Rock Out With Your Cross Out!

Starting September 25th, you too can own your very own PC or Mac compatible version of the latest Guitar Hero/Rock Band ripoff. If you buy it through the Family Christian store online, you can save 20%. Snooping around the Family Christian site, I learned a few things:

  1. They also sell a DDR ripoff: Dance Praise 2 – The ReMix
  2. It is possible to make an audible eye roll. Just look at this shirt and you’ll see
  3. Metal bibles are not bibles about the history of heavy metal and why you should worship it even if you’ve never seen a show.

I can appreciate Christians being interested in playing the music they enjoy, but let’s recap: Guitar Praise basically rips off Guitar Hero and Rock Band by combining the two existing game ideas and only bringing new songs to the mix; Dance Praise 2 is a total DDR ripoff; the audible eye roll t-shirt uses a protected font. Seems like these all kind of go against that whole “Thou shalt not steal” thing Christians seem to believe.

They’re not being sued for it, so..

Yeah, I’ve seen this type of thing all the time. Shirts that resemble A&F or American Eagle, or Old Navy. The difference being they are altered to share a Christian message.

Now, I’m going to be honest, I myself am a Christian and church go-er, but I’ve never agreed with the marketing ideas.

It’s wrong to steal ideas for your own use, whether the message is good or not. The Christian industry should try to create something original that will get people’s attention, not just a blatant rip-off.

Heineken’s been my beer of choice for a while now. Good pick.

Guitar Hero isn’t just a game, but the beginning of a new genre. In ten years time, there will be plenty of clones, just as there were plenty of Doom clones (same gameplay, but in different settings). In this case, offering a genre of music that Guitar Hero doesn’t offer is a significant change. Digital Praise probably got the go ahead from their lawyers before making the game.

If it was me, though, I would have changed the gameplay more or asked Red Octane for permission. Perhaps DP did, but that’s the sort of deal that probably would have shown up in the news. And I doubt Jesus cares about technicalities.

If they’re *stealing* from Red Octane, can I *steal* from Bethesda if I have the backing of a major Religion?

@ Aaron:
GuitarFreaks came out nearly a decade ago. GH was definitely not the creator of the genre… Not that this game isn’t clearly a direct copy of GH, I’m just trying to clarify that GH itself isn’t exactly the first of it’s kind.

@Sam – Good call. I totally forgot about the GuitarFreaks game. That game kicked my ass. I played it at Dave & Busters awhile back and was all cocky with my whole “I know GH, I can play this.” I don’t think I hit a single note :-|

A little late onto this post but news on Guitar praise. It too is getting DLC.
Musical wasps Stryper will be coming in 2009. I can hardly contain my nonchalance.
