Strong Bad’s Cool Game For Attractive People: Episode 1

strongbad.jpg

Got a few hours? Love Strong Bad and Homestar Runner? Got a Wii? Got 10 bucks? Don’t want any more questions? Well, friends… I have a game for you. I finally had a chance to download the WiiWare version of Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People: Episode 1 and I’ve gotta say, it was awesome.

A point-and-click adventure, this first installment of many more monthly episodes to come. The series is also available for the PC. You play as Strong Bad – an awesome hot wrestler only interested in the ladies, checking his lappy for emails and making people like me laugh. Your mission? To beat the snot out of Homestar Runner.

For those unfamiliar with the history, HomestarRunner.com started as a site in 2000 featuring a couple of cartoons and a couple of games. Run by brothers Matt and Mike Chapman, the content is targeted toward twenty-somethings (mainly because of the occasional 80s reference) but their fan base consists of all ages. Matt does all the voices (except for Marzipan – that’s Mike’s girlfriend, Missy) and Mike does most of the programming, animation and graphics. Together, they write new episodes and – because Homestar Runner is a side project for them both – new ones typically come out every month or two.

Over the years, the characters have grown but they all remain irreverent, crazy and unpredictable… three of my favorite traits for cartoons. The main site: HomestarRunner.com is advertising-free which is a breath of fresh air. Seems like I know another site that follows that rule… hrm… some gamer chick… I don’t know. Anyway, the Homestar Runner site may have started just with cartoons and a few games, but now they’ve branched out and launched Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People series.

Once I FINALLY got the freaking WiiWare game downloaded (seems that even with a T1, downloading anything from the Wii Shop takes forEVER) and dug in, I was in love. I don’t want to give away anything about the adventures you’ll encounter because the game is short and sweet and it’s best if you experience them on your own. You’ll gather items in your inventory and use them to advance the plot. If you get stuck (and you will because some of the things you have to do are totally random) you can check out the walkthrough section of the Telltale games site. You can win the game in under 10 hours – and it will leave you hungry for the next episode: Strong Badia the Free.

WoW Gets Physical

When Wii Fit came out, people finally started realizing that games can actually be more than something to keep you entertained between Heineken swigs and bathroom trips. For those with limited mobility (elderly, obese), the Wii Fit can make a difference in their health, but many gamers break more of a sweat watching the infamous hula-hooping video than they do playing the games. Those who require more of a challenge to feel the burn will appreciate this World of Warcraft mod using treadmills with joysticks programmed to make running across Azeroth a little tougher than the developers initially intended:

If treadmill running and exploding hearts don’t appeal to you, you’ve got a few different exercise machines to choose from (and no… bong smoking does NOT count as an exercise – EVEN IF the bong is really heavy.) Gamercize, for example, sells stationary cycles and steppers that connect to your console. If you stop cycling or stepping one one of these babies, your controller won’t work. Another company, NeoRacer helps convert laundry racks back into exercise bikes through inexpensive kits that convert them into virtual race cars. By downloading their software and either converting your existing exercise bike or purchasing their ViBike, you can control the speed of your vehicle by pedaling in a variety of web downloads or supported PC titles like Crazy Taxi and Need for Speed.

Soulja Boy Shows Off Not-So-Exclusive Sidekick

[youtube zeIBxhIi0AA]

On Friday, Gizmodo ran a story about Soulja Boy and his nearly incomprehensible homemade video showing off what he claims is the only Xbox 360 Sidekick of its kind in the world. But looking through the comments in the same post, thegetupkid may have busted his exclusivity apart with a link to HipTop3.com where they tell you how you can get create your own version.

YOOOOOOOOOUUUUUU decide for yourself.

Register to Vote on your Xbox 360 Today

Don’t want to leave your 72 hour Rainbow 6 marathon to go register to vote? This year, you won’t have to. Microsoft Corporation and Rock the Vote just announced a partnership that will allow 360 owners to register to vote, participate in presidential polls and voice their opinions to the presidential candidates starting on Monday, August 25th – the first day of the Democratic National Convention. Just how many people do they think can be reached through Xbox LIVE? Look at it this way: if Xbox LIVE were a state, it would rank as the country’s seventh largest, giving it approximately 20 electoral votes. We should probably prepare ourselves to see Master Chief as the most popular write in candidate this election.

Wii Got Caught Stealin’ … Again

wiiburglar.jpg

What’s the deal with Nintendo stealing ideas from the little guys lately? First there was the Texas-based developer deal and then yesterday I heard a report on NPR talking about another issue from Hillcrest Laboratories, based in Rockville, Maryland. According to the article on CNN:

Hillcrest is accusing Nintendo of infringement in four patents dealing with technology for a handheld three-dimensional pointing device and a display interface system for organizing graphic content on a TV.

“While Hillcrest Labs has a great deal of respect for Nintendo and the Wii, Hillcrest Labs believes that Nintendo is in clear violation of its patents and has taken this action to protect its intellectual property rights,” it said.

This could cause some issues for Nintendo who has sold over 29 million Wii units worldwide since the launch in 2006. For shame!

16-Year-Old Trades High School for Guitar Hero

blakepeebles.jpg
Get that cocky little smirk out of my face, you bastard.

16-year-old Blake Peebles aka Dreminem has dropped out of school to concentrate on his Guitar Hero skills. This North Raleigh teen started competing professionally a few months back and so far has pulled in around $1,000 in cash, some gift certificates and 52 Chik-fil-A combo meals. Apparently, these meager earnings and a bunch of bitching were all it took to convince his parents to let him drop out of high school.

“We couldn’t take the complaining anymore,” says his mother, Hunter. “He always told me that he thought school was a waste of time.”

*Insert record screech here*

What the FUCK?!?! Ok, so maybe Blake is really good at Guitar Hero. In fact, he estimates that he ranks in the top 10 on the scoreboards for about 20 songs on GH3. But that does not change the fact that he is also 16. And when you are 16, you are SUPPOSED to think school is a waste of time. And your parents are supposed to make you go anyway – EVEN IF YOU BITCH ABOUT IT. Know why? Because if they coddle you like a fucking baby, then that’s all you’ll ever know how to be. And you won’t know how to deal with people like me talking shit about you. And you’ll end up turning into a bumbling cryball or a violent psychopath.

GRANTED, they didn’t let Blake abandon his education altogether. They are paying for private tutors and he attends home school.

Blake is happy with his success. Mom and Dad are happy with his grades. Since he’s gone to the tutoring arrangement, she hasn’t once had to tell him to do his homework, because he does it on his own. They got plenty of grief from family and friends about their decision at first, but they’ve also watched Blake, who is shy and disliked school, become a happier person.

So he was shy and disliked at school and now he’s happier? No shit! I would’ve been way happier if I had gotten to hide from everyone I hated and stay up as late as I wanted gaming. Sometimes when Blake’s dad Mike is heading out to the gym before 5 a.m., Blake will still be practicing. They call it “working the late shift.”

Aww, isn’t that cute?

FUCK NO! Shit like this infuriates me. Let’s say Blake doesn’t make it in the professional world of gaming. Which, is not an unlikely scenario. He may be top 10 on the scoreboard in a lot of GH3 songs, but top 10 does not a sponsorship make. So, he loses it. No sponsor. What would he do? He has already made it clear that high school is a waste of time, so there’s no way he’s going to college. Chances are, he’ll end up in some low-level dead end job where “working the late shift” involves wearing an orange striped hat and asking people with real jobs if they want fries. Way to go mom and pops! Good job creating a better future for your kiddo. For Blake’s sake, I hope he is a Guitar Hero genius and earns beautiful sponsors because if he isn’t, he’s in for a nasty bitch slap.
