Feel the Pain – Get Capped

fpsvest.jpg

I’m all about making gaming experiences more realistic and immersive, but this little masochistic contraption kind of freaks me out. Developed by TN Games, the FPS vest is available in classic black or camo and right now, you can get yours bundled with a a copy of 3rd Space Incursion (what a compelling title :-| ) for $169. The vest hooks up to your PC and, according to their site, “is an impact-generating device designed to enable you to feel the game’s action for the ultimate gaming experience. It contains eight active zones that simulate the direction and forces of bullet fire, crushing explosions, and fear-inducing finger taps as they occur in the game.” So in other words, if your character gets capped in the back, the vest will punch you in the back in the same place at the same time. Now, I don’t think the vest is designed to cause you physical pain, just pressure, but it’s still a bit frightening. For a list of compatible games, check out TN Games website.

Gamer Depression is a Bitch

SOURCE: ToothpasteForDinner.com

So I haven’t posted anything in way too long. I’ve been dealing with some “WHERE ARE THE GOOD GAMES YOU EFFING EFFS?!?!” down-n-dirty gamer depression. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve had some great times with Rock Band. So great, actually that I somehow managed to break the spring in my whammy bar and need to send my guitar in for repairs. But I haven’t seen anything new (other than Portal) that has made me say “WOW! I should go get that!!!” I don’t feel like re-playing any of the titles sitting on my shelves. I even got bored playing Tetris last night – which I didn’t think was even possible. Last night, I was so desperate to play something new that I downloaded Boogie Bunnies and played that. It was okay because you get to pelt bunnies at each other and when you take too long, they fall off into a pond of frozen water, which is sickly satisfying. But the fact still remains I’M BORED WITH THE GAME SELECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where are more titles like Heavenly Sword? Will they EVER release Resident Evil 5? Are they going to come out with a Tomb Raider sequel that doesn’t freaking suck and use an anniversary copout? For real… I’m hurting here.

Anyway, I promise I’ll start posting again. I guess the first step to gamer depression is admitting you’re depressed. I’m not sure what the other 11 steps are, but I’m pretty sure they involve drinking a lot of beer and sleeping, so I’m going to get started on that.

You’ve Unlocked an Achievement!

Wouldn’t your day feel so much more productive if every time you did something worthwhile you got achievement points?! I don’t know about you, but the achievement points I get through my Xbox 360 make me very happy. So much so that if I have the option between the PS3 version of a game with potentially better graphics and a 360 game with unlockable achievements, I’ll go the 360 route every time.

Here’s Llamaphobia’s visualization of some Life Achievement points:

Can you imagine if you got points for everything?? I would have unlocked this one an hour ago for sure:
Fist Catcher (sat in one hour long meeting without punching the girl that says “Uh huh!” every 2 seconds even once!) 200 points!”

VG Cats – Still Alive

VG Cats put music to the ending song in Valve’s Portal. My friend WldCard posted this on my MySpace comments a few weeks back and I meant to re-post it here but forgot. Then today, Ted Kieffer sent me the lyrics and I figured now was a good time to give the lovely little song some props.

Here are the lyrics so you can sing along:

This was a triumph.
I’m making a note here:
HUGE SUCCESS.
It’s hard to overstate
my satisfaction.

Aperture Science
We do what we must
because we can.
For the good of all of us
except the ones who are dead.

But there’s no sense crying
over every mistake.
You just keep on trying
’til you run out of cake.
And the Science gets done.
And you make a neat gun.
For the people who are
still alive.

I’m not even angry.
I’m being so sincere right now.
Even though you broke my heart.
And killed me.
And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you!

Now these points of data
make a beautiful line.
And we’re out of beta.
We’re releasing on time.
So I’m glad I got burned.
Think of all the things we learned
for the people who are
still alive.

Go ahead and leave me.
I think I prefer to stay inside.
Maybe you’ll find someone else
to help you.

Maybe Black Mesa…
THAT WAS A JOKE
HA HA, FAT CHANCE.
Anyway this cake is great.
Its so delicious and moist.

Look at me still talking when there’s science to do.
When I look out there
it makes me glad I’m not you.
I’ve experiments to run
there is research to be done
on the people who are
still alive.

and believe me I am still alive.
I’m doing science and so I’m still alive.
I feel fantastic and I’m still alive.
While your dying I’ll be still alive.
And when your dead I will be still alive.
Still alive.
Still alive.

From Pixels to People

halflifeednorton.jpg
Ed Norton as Gordon Freeman? I’d watch that movie.

It seems like movie studios are having an increasingly hard time coming up with original movie plots. From the 2007 Alvin and the Chipmunks remake (oh the humanity!) to the upcoming Street Fighter flick, everything seems to be recycled with nothing new to offer but better (?) digital effects. If that’s the way it’s gonna be, I’d like to point all movie makers to the following articleon Gaming News Today that recommends which actors are best suited for some of the movie-worthy titles. Check out the article here.

Collage-Tastic!

mario-collage.jpg

Washington DC artist Chris Lange is selling Nintendo collage creations built entirely out of old Nintendo Power magazines. You can request your favorite 8-bit character in 30″ x 20″ form for just $250 which ain’t shabby for original, commissioned art. Want another size? He’ll hook you up for the right price. If you’re a cheapskate (or just broke after spending all of your money on Rock Band, beer and Taco Cabana queso like me) fear not, he’s also selling prints for $20.

So check out Project Maestro – the latest creation from cynergy.labs. This brings together Microsoft WPF, third party community libraries and custom built IR gloves to demonstrate next generation human to computer interfaces. The app is kick ass. The only down side? You look like you’re acting out Eensy Weensie Spider while you’re using it.
