A Day in the Digital Life of JelleVanDun

I’m feeling lazy, so here’s the description copied and pasted from YouTube: “This Stop Motion Animation takes you into another world. In this world no physical laws count. The only laws that count are the laws of the Animator. I animated myself through my house and the city of Breda, the Netherlands. It took me 6 months to complete. That is mainly because of the weather. It wasn’t always suitable to shoot my scenes. The song I used is called Chinois by DJ Aphrodite and can be found on the record Aftershock. Enjoy! I would like to know what you think about it.” The video was created by JelleVanDun and it is totally awesome.

Online Gamers – The Next Gen of CEOs

A new study by IBM and Seriosity proves that online role playing games are shaping the next generation of corporate leaders, revealing similar qualities between white-collared business executives and those who play massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG).

“What we’ve found is that success as a business leader may depend on skills as a gamer,” said Jim Spohrer, Director of Services Research, IBM Research Center in Almaden, Calif. “Smart organizations are recognizing valued employees who play online games and apply their skills and experiences as virtual leaders to their ‘real world’ jobs.” Read the rest of this entry »

So have you been paying attention to what’s going on with Manhunt 2 and the AO rating? Here’s the scoop: Manhunt 2 was designed as an AO (adults only) rated game. But the thing is, Nintendo and Sony won’t allow the playback of AO rated titles on their consoles. So unless the developers replace guts with gladiolas or fight the ESRB on an unfair rating, this may be the end of the Manhunt series.

I don’t get it. Why have Nintendo and Sony decided to kick game developers and adult gamers in the proverbial nuts? The rating system is there to forewarn people about the content contained in the games they buy. It should NOT be used as a way to brand racy games with a scarlet “AO” and send them packing. I’m an adult. Why shouldn’t I be allowed to by adult games?

The thing is, I don’t even like the Manhunt series. But that part doesn’t matter. The part that matters is that a game is being banned for no real reason. And if this game is censored, what will happen with the GTA series (which I DO like)? Are gamers going to have to start wearing trench coats and hats to go to that seedy store in the bad neighborhood with the flickering neon open sign through the curtain in the back room just to play some EFFING AO games?!?!?! WTF?!!?

Video Games Live Rocks Dallas, Texas

Video Games Live

For the past five years, Video Games Live (VGL) has overtaken stages around the world. Whether in Brazil, Korea or Dallas, the VGL message is always the same – video games are art. Co-creators Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall brought VGL to Dallas, Texas for the first time on Wednesday, June 20th and showed the audience what it means to be a gamer. I had really high expectations for the two night run at the Morton Meyerson Symphony Center and I’m happy to report that they were all exceeded.

Going to VGL is more than going to a symphony. These guys have one sweet setup. A giant projector screen displays video game clips perfectly in synch with the musicians. Enhanced by smoke machines, impressive lighting systems add to the experience. Occasionally, there are even actors on stage. Read the rest of this entry »

Tommy T in the Big D

The Game Dame and Tommy Tallarico

Tommy Tallarico is in my hood this week for the Dallas Video Games Live (VGL) concert. I took him out last night to Ojeda’s so he could taste REAL Tex-Mex and sample salsa that wasn’t made in NY city (“Get a rope.”) I did see a little salsa-induced sweating, but he didn’t throw in the towel. He stayed tough. ;-)

I wasn’t sure if Tommy’s stage persona would match his day to day personality, but it totally does. He really is in tune with everything going on in the video game industry. He’s practically a walking Wikipedia for all things video game related. He’s also freaking hilarious. At one point, we were trying to decide which concept would be better: a video game based on CHiPS or T.J. Hooker. I still can’t decide.

Tommy gave me passes to check out the VGL rehearsal this morning. The first thing I saw was a dude walking across a rig of stage lights hanging about 80 feet up in the air all Cirque du Soleil style. He was a pro. I would’ve been scared to death.

Rehearsals started with a World of Warcraft tribute. Even with the house lights up, I got chills. This symphony is amazing and last night Tommy said this choir is one of the best ones he’s worked with. I watched the musicians furiously playing their instruments, concentrating on sheets and sheets of music and thought, “They’re playing music from VIDEO GAMES. How cool is that?!” It’s awesome to have someone working so hard to legitimize video games as an art form.

One of the coolest things I’ve recently learned about VGL is that they always use local talent. They don’t spend a bajillion dollars flying the same orchestra from show to show. There are actually only 8 people in Tommy’s crew. These folks get into town, do a PR blitz and get 2 or 3 rehearsals with the local choir/symphony before the show.

I’ll be going to the show both tonight and tomorrow night and I’ll write all about it once I’ve seen the production. After what I saw this morning, I’m totally pumped.
