Review: F.E.A.R.

If you’re looking for a creep-tastic game that will make you double check the bulb in your night-light, go get F.E.A.R. With fluid and intuitive controls, this is a fantastic game unlike any FPS I‚Äôve played on the 360. F.E.A.R. is a definite buy that I’m sure will top many “Best of” lists for 2006.

A paramilitary force has infiltrated an aerospace compound, taken hostages, and completely obliterated the government’s Special Forces team. You are a member of the First Encounter Assault Recon (F.E.A.R.) ‚Äì an elite classified strike force sent in to handle these types of situations. According to your boss, the enemies are lead by Paxton Fettel – a military commander (sans his marbles) who has taken telepathic control of this secret army of cloned soldiers. Once he’s contained, the situation can be resolved.

Almost immediately after beginning your quest to take down Fettel, things start getting uber weird. I don’t want to be a plot spoiler, so I’ll just say you start having some seriously disturbing flashbacks. Then there’s a freaky little girl following you around who can apparently set stuff on fire with her mind. I don’t know about you, but few things make my skin crawl more than creepy kids… especially when you can hear the echoing sound of their laughter in a dark, empty room.

In order to defend yourself from the enemies, you’ll be able to carry grenades and up to three types of guns. For massive enemy attacks, you can use your Prince of Persia meets Matrix ability to slow down time. Plus, because you’re a member of F.E.A.R., you’re a total badass when it comes to hand-to-hand combat. This is invaluable when you’re in close quarters and run out of bullets.

The graphics in this game are incredible. Not too dark… not too bright… everything is just as it should be. Occasionally, the light blue crosshair used to aim your weapons can be a bit tricky to see in darker rooms – even when you go into slow mo mode, but if it was too easy, it wouldn’t be the kind of game that keeps you hours past your bedtime – and that’s half the fun.

Background music is usually a pulsating, rhythmic white noise – so when something or someone jumps out at you and breaks that lullaby, it will send a shock of adrenaline straight to your heart, forcing cuss words of epic proportions past your lips. Weapons are LOUD and AWESOME. When you’ve got a submachine gun in each hand and can blast down a group of enemies, you’ll feel strangely satisfied. When someone throws a grenade at you (or you screw up and throw one too close to yourself), there’s a high-pitched tone that will make you swear your ears are ringing from the blast.

The story is unpredictable but very well written. With knuckle-whitening combat and award-worthy graphics and sound, you can’t really go wrong. F.E.A.R. was released for the PC last year and is now being formatted for the PS3. For more information about F.E.A.R., check out their web site at: WhatIsFear.com.
