It makes me very happy when modern companies give props to old school games. This ad for American Express is the most recent one I’ve seen. Good times.

The first time I saw a commercial for Dead Rising, I was totally excited. I hate going to the mall, and the idea of being able to kill people wandering the halls sounded divine. Last night, I downloaded the demo on my 360 and, much to my surprise, I was sorely disappointed. First of all, if you’ve ever tried downloading demos on the 360, you know that it takes for freaking ever… but usually, they’re worth the wait. This one – not so much. Read the rest of this entry »

The first time I looked into Saints Row for the 360, I was skeptical. From the looks of their site and the tone of their press release, it seemed like a total GTA: San Andreas rip off. But after I played the demo, I changed my tune. Due out on the 29th of August, this game is going to kick ass. Read the rest of this entry »

I love hearing about creative contests. But you know what I love even more? Winning them. Last week, Gearbox Software held a writing contest and challenged their bloggers to submit fake reviews for their upcoming title: Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway. While I broke the 500 word limit by 3 words (damn you, you buggy JavaScript word counter!!!), they let it slide because I got twice as many votes as the runner-up. Read the rest of this entry »

In Saints Row, players start as a member of the 3rd Street Saints. Under constant threat from rival gangs and corrupt officials, the city of Stilwater must be conquered one district at a time. Saints Row starts with a bang and never slows down, offering an unparalleled level of character and vehicle customization and the freedom to progress through the game any way the player chooses. Every action taken in the fully dynamic world is an opportunity for players to earn respect. With enough respect, the city evolves into a giant playground for the player to traverse. Saints Row is revolutionizing the open world genre with an online multiplayer experience, allowing players to battle it out against rival gangs online for the first time. The game will support 12 players on Xbox Live(R) online entertainment network.
I checked out the official site at SaintsRow.com. After you verify your DOB, you’re taken to a page where the center image is a pimp holding a rocket launcher. Sweet. “If it takes theft, extortion or tried and true brute force, then that’s what you’ve got to do.” the site’s overview explains. The game is scheduled for an August 29th release, but I’m curious to see how many panties get bunched over the gangster life, kill or be killed story line. Will it actually make it to the shelves by then? (UPDATE: Review: Saints Row Demo)
